Eventually Belle had to go. Angus pushed her off and hurried to the sill against the far wall, collecting a porcelain teapot and a load of miscellaneous cups which clinked as he carried them. Belle was leaning against the dresser near the partition door, her hair hanging left, her smile regarding him as a challenge. She sighed and her breasts rose against her croptop, ironing out the odd wrinkle around the armpits.

Angus looked anywhere but at her, conscious of the raggedness of his jeans and jumper, his overgrown hair, his unshaved face.

– So what the fuck’s this, then? said Nick, peering at one of the pictures.

The picture was The Broad and the Narrow Way: a landscape bisected by a stream, with a path running uphill on either side of it. The left-hand side was province of the theatre, the public house, inferred sexual promiscuity, Sunday opening, music and other sins. It culminated, on top of a hill, in a place that looked a lot like London during the Blitz. On the right-hand side were the pious: Victorians praying fervently and shewing charity upon one another. Theirs was the Narrow Way, which – despite its narrowness – consisted mainly of lost expressions and expansive lawns. It did, however, lead to the splendid celestial city, with the Lamb of God rising out of it on Its four marvellous legs.

– It’s The Broad and the Narrow Way, isn’t it? said Angus.

– What the fuck did you put that up for?

He inhaled slowly.

– Nick, he said, I didn’t decorate this place. It’s just how it was when I moved in. No-one’s lived here since, like, before the war or something.

Nick peered at it again.

– You can tell we’re in Wales, anyhow. He laughed. Look. There’s only a fucking sheep in heaven!

– That’s the Lamb of God, said Angus shortly.
